Microsoft has been continuously tightening its grip on how users install Windows 11, particularly when it comes to enforcing Microsoft account sign-ins during setup. In previous builds, users could easily bypass the Microsoft account requirement by using command prompt tricks. However, as of recent Insider Preview builds, those older methods no longer work.

This article walks you through a new and currently working method to bypass the forced Microsoft account requirement during the Windows 11 setup process, allowing you to create a local user account instead.
Why Has Microsoft Blocked Older Bypass Methods?
Until recently, users could press Shift + F10 during setup to open the Command Prompt and use this command:
oobe\bypassnro
This would reboot the PC and allow you to set up Windows without signing into a Microsoft account. Unfortunately, Microsoft has now disabled this command in recent Insider builds, stating that it was removed to “enhance security and user experience.” Realistically, this change forces users to log in with a Microsoft account to complete the installation.
The change was mentioned in Microsoft’s official Windows Insider blog post, specifically regarding Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5516.
A New Way to Skip the Microsoft Account Requirement
Thankfully, there’s a new workaround that does not require rebooting the system and is even more efficient than the old method.
✅ Steps to Bypass Microsoft Account Requirement in Windows 11
- Start the Windows 11 Installation Process
Proceed with the Windows installation as usual until you reach the screen that asks you to sign in with a Microsoft account. - Open Command Prompt Using Shift + F10
When you see the Microsoft account sign-in screen, press Shift + F10 to launch the Command Prompt window. - Enter the New Bypass Command Type the following command and press Enter:
start ms-cxh://localonly - Create a Local User Account
This command launches the account setup screen directly, allowing you to:- Enter a username for the local account.
- (Optionally) Enter a password.
- Click Next to proceed.
- Finish Setup
That’s it! Windows will now continue the installation using the local account you created—no Microsoft account required.
Why Is This Important?
For many users, especially IT professionals, enthusiasts, or those concerned about privacy, being able to create a local account during setup is essential. Microsoft’s increasing push toward cloud-based integration removes choice and could alienate users who prefer control over their systems.
It’s worth noting that once you’ve completed the setup using a Microsoft account, switching back to a local account doesn’t undo the fact that your data has already been sent to Microsoft. Hence, bypassing it from the start is preferable for privacy-conscious users.
Will This Bypass Last?
At the time of writing, this method works on current builds of Windows 11, but there’s no guarantee it will last. Microsoft is actively closing off these loopholes in newer builds, especially as they roll out future updates like Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.
If this method stops working, we will update this article with the latest workaround, if available.
Final Thoughts
Microsoft should ideally offer users a simple toggle option to choose between a local account or a Microsoft account during setup. Forcing people to sign in is not only inconvenient but goes against the long-standing tradition of giving users freedom during installation.
Until then, this method provides a valuable way to maintain control over your installation process.
