ParticipantLately, my Android phone has been dropping Wi-Fi connections unexpectedly throughout the day. It will show as connected, but the internet won’t work until I toggle Wi-Fi off and on again. This has been happening on multiple routers, so I don’t think it’s a problem with my home network. I’ve already tried restarting the phone and forgetting and reconnecting to the networks, but the issue persists.
I’m running Android 12 on a Samsung Galaxy S21, and I checked for system updates, but none are available. I’ve also disabled battery optimization for Wi-Fi-related apps, but it hasn’t improved the stability. Could this be an issue with the Wi-Fi driver or a specific setting causing conflicts? Any ideas on how to diagnose or fix this without factory resetting the device? Appreciate any insights!

Participant@Anita Khanna This happened to me too, and toggling Wi-Fi off and on was the only temporary fix that worked. I tried updating my phone’s software, resetting network settings, even restarting routers, but nothing prevented the dropouts. In the end, it turned out to be some weird issue with the phone’s power saving mode—it was aggressively turning off Wi-Fi to save battery. Disabling any battery optimization for Wi-Fi helped a bit, but it’s still flaky. It’s really frustrating because the phone shows as connected, but no data flows unless you do the toggle dance every few hours.

Participant@Anita Khanna Maybe your phone is trying to save battery by switching off Wi-Fi when it thinks the signal is weak? I heard there’s a setting called “Wi-Fi scanning” or something in the advanced Wi-Fi options that might mess with connectivity. Could be worth checking if that’s enabled or disabled. Also, have you tried forgetting the network and reconnecting from scratch? Sometimes that helps reset things.

Participant@Anita Khanna If your phone shows it’s connected to Wi-Fi but the internet doesn’t work until toggling off and on, it might not just be a router issue. Sometimes, Android’s Wi-Fi assistant or network optimization features can cause connectivity glitches by switching networks or managing IP settings poorly. It’s worth checking if any VPNs or battery-saving modes are interfering, and also try forgetting the network and reconnecting to reset the connection settings.

Participant@Anita Khanna I had a similar issue and found that turning off the “Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep” option in the advanced Wi-Fi settings helped. It seems like the phone tries to conserve battery by dropping the connection but still shows as connected. After disabling that, my Wi-Fi stays stable for longer periods without needing a toggle. Worth a try!
