I’ve been working on some detailed composites recently and find myself spending a ton of time refining layer masks, especially when working with intricate edges like hair or foliage. It feels tedious to constantly switch between the brush and selection tools, and sometimes the edges still look too harsh or unnatural. I’ve tried using the Refine Edge and Select and Mask features, but I’m wondering if there are any Photoshop tips for making this process faster without sacrificing quality.

Also, anyone who has tricks for non-destructive editing with masks would be great to hear from. I want to keep my workflow flexible since I often need to tweak masks multiple times throughout a project. Any tips on shortcuts, brush settings, or blending modes that make mask adjustments more efficient would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

@Rohan Patel Switching between brush and selection is normal but could be sped up by using the Refine Edge tool or Select and Mask workspace, especially in Photoshop. If you’re still on an older version, note that the Select and Mask interface offers better edge detection and smoothing for hair and foliage, which can reduce tedious manual work. Just be careful with aggressive smoothing or feathering as it might soften your mask edges too much. 🙂
