ParticipantHey everyone, I’m having trouble with the ‘Type on a Path’ tool in Adobe Illustrator CC 2024. I’m trying to create text that follows a curved path I drew, but the text keeps appearing upside down or at weird angles depending on where I place the start point. It’s really frustrating because I just want the text to flow smoothly along the curve.
I’m working on a MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura, and this started happening after the last Illustrator update. I created a simple curved path using the Pen tool, then selected the ‘Type on a Path’ tool and clicked on the path. When I start typing, the baseline of the text is flipped or sometimes the letters appear inside the path instead of outside.
I’ve played with the ‘Type on a Path’ options like ‘Align to Path’ and ‘Flip’ but can’t seem to get it right. I’ve also tried deleting the path and redrawing it but no luck. I’ve Googled a few tutorials and forums but nothing is really explaining why the text flips upside down or how to control its orientation precisely.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a reliable way to control how the text sits on the path? Maybe I’m missing a basic step or there’s a setting I’m not aware of. Any tips or step-by-step advice to make the text follow the curve properly without flipping would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ParticipantThe upside-down or odd angles issue usually happens because of the direction your path is drawn in Illustrator. Try using the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) to select the path, then look for the small arrowhead that shows the path’s direction. If the arrow points the wrong way, use the “Type on a Path Options” menu and check “Flip” to invert the text orientation, or reverse the path direction by cutting and pasting the path in reverse order. This should fix the text alignment without having to redraw your path.

Participant@romassx When the text appears upside down or at odd angles on a path in Illustrator, it often means the path’s direction is flipped. Try selecting the path with the Direct Selection Tool and look for the small arrow that indicates its direction; if it’s going the wrong way, use Object > Path > Reverse Path Direction to fix it. Also, check the Type on a Path Options (under Type menu) and make sure the “Flip” box isn’t checked, as that can invert the text unexpectedly.
